Totally Wicked e-liquid Test Results Summary

Our UK-produced Red Label, Odyssey and TECC Titus e-liquid and Gold Standard flavour concentrate ranges are manufactured from the same set of high quality ingredients. Ingredients of UK produced ranges additional to those in the flavour concentrates are: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, water and nicotine. We only use these ingredients in US Pharmacopeia (USP) and/or European Pharmacopoeia (EP) grades, to assure ourselves that our e-liquids contain only the best ingredients. They are sourced entirely from within the UK. The flavour concentrates themselves are also supplied only from UK sources of verifiably high ‘food grade’ quality, and screened for toxicological risk by inhalation before they can be included in our fluid ranges.

Our UK produced ranges are therefore quality assured at the specification level of each ingredient type, procured against these specifications, supported by supplier conformity testing and certification and stored, produced and packaged such that the integrity and quality of the base ingredients is carried through production to the final customer packaged items. We recognise that our processes and indeed our suppliers cannot be taken for granted, and that any quality system must be independently validated to enable absolute authority for the system or product in question. Our customers should demand from our business, the assurance that our products are suitable and safe for use, supported by independent assurance of such.

Our e-liquids were tested to the validated analytical procedures of internationally renowned e-cigarette expert Dr Konstantinos Farsalinos. The validated procedures employed by Dr Farsalinos and his team ensure the accuracy, precision and specificity of analytical data. This validation process ensures that the safety data generated by the analytical laboratory is of the highest standard, and can be reproduced by other independent analytical laboratories throughout the world. We relied on Dr Farsalinos’s significant experience and authority of e-liquid testing and physiological risk to specify the chemicals that we should quantify and where necessary remove from our e-liquid formulations. The independence of the experts and laboratories was important to us, and we believe should be important to our customers. It would be very easy for us to state that our e-liquids were free of these chemicals from our own data, or from that of our suppliers. Having the data available from entirely independent and verified sources gives us much greater reassurance that we are doing the best for our customers.

The Totally Wicked e-liquids were tested by an analytical method called gas chromatography, utilizing a highly sensitive detection method called flame ionisation (FID). The SkyLab-Med team also used gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC-MS), enabling the team to maximize the sensitivity of their testing procedures. Sample preparation was performed to rigorously high standards, providing maximum sensitivity for the GC instrument. For validated analytical chemical testing, the lowest quantity of an analyte that can be distinguished from the absence of the analyte is called the limit of detection (LOD). The lowest amount of an analyte which can be quantitatively determined with suitable precision and accuracy is known as the limit of quantification (LOQ). In simple terms the LOQ is the most precise measurement that can be made by an instrument, and the LOD is the level below which a qualified expert can state that the chemical is of no concern. Dr Farsalinos established a suitable LOD as 10 μg per ml for flavour concentrates which are diluted before use, and as 0.5-1 μg per ml for ready to use liquids. The Totally Wicked e-liquid range was tested for three chemicals of concern, as defined by our independent expert, Dr Farsalinos, namely: diacetyl, acetyl propionyl and acetoin.

The test results for our UK base range of concentrates are as detailed in Table 1 below:

Any flavours that contained potentially harmful chemicals were reformulated, or removed from the range, if we could not reformulate and support subsequent ‘clear’ testing. We did not seek to try to ‘fudge’ matters in the form of ‘toxicologically supportable levels’; the chemicals simply had to be below the limit of detection (LOD) of the test methods defined. Essentially we required of ourselves that an appropriately accurate test did not detect the chemicals. Since Honeydew Melon and Blushin Russian contained chemicals at levels not deemed by Dr Farsalinos to be safe for inhalation, both were removed from the range.

Once we were 100% confident that our UK-produced e-liquid and flavour concentrate ranges were free of potentially harmful chemicals, we turned our attention to the USA-produced Patriot Range, and the Titan range. These were again tested using methods specified Dr Farsalinos, and the tests were carried out in the same independent laboratory. Table 2 and Table 3 present the results for both our Patriot and Titan ranges respectively.
